Christopher Reeve: Bigger than Superman

There are many heroes in life and one of mine is Christopher Reeve who has inspired many and and placed spinal cord injury reasearch in the forefront of public consciousness. At the height of his movie career, Christopher Reeve suffered spinal cord injury in a riding accident. He was paralyzed from the neck down. Breathing took great effort and breathing and speaking took even more. It would have been easy to give up. Not Christopher Reeve.He, instead, decided to make the accident and his life a catalyst to changes in the treatment of spinal cord injury. Not only did he return to the movie industry but was active in spurring on research into his condition. Determined to walk again, he worked tirelessly with his physicians and therapists. Unfortunately, an accident in physical therapy caused a hip fracture which made his dream not quite possible. When faced with seemingly daunting situations, all I need to do is remember the life of this good man and everything else seems trivial. This quote in one of his speeches, inspires me to keep dreaming: "So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, then when we summon the will, they become inevitable." |

Nice thoughts of turning injury into hopes of cure. Christopher Reeves injury lead to the development of Stem Cells which would one day save a lot of us- a pure legacy of heroism!
