Philantrophy Is Alive: Hope for Haiti Tops 58M

The January 22 two hour Hope for Haiti charitable telethon has grossed a preliminary tally of $58 M which does not include million dollar contributions by the likes of Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt/ Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCarpio. I Tunes and Rhapsody's sales of the Hope for Haiti album topped their one day pre-sales record and 99 per cent of sales will go to the Haiti relief effort. The album may be downloaded at I Tunes for $7.99. Haiti has long needed world assistance but it took catastrophic events for the world to rally together. Looking at heart breaking images no doubt brought to people's minds the finiteness of life. Just as Katrina and the tsunami brought home how precious life and relationships are, the earthquake in Haiti brought home the reality that but for the grace of God go I. It also brought home the immense generosity of people world wide giving time,talent and treasure. First Lady, Michelle Obama was immediately on TV requesting $10.00 donations. Images of airplanes from Russia and China, US military repairing the airport, people from far away countries giving away what they can, are all heart warming and uplifting sights even as the images of pain and suffering seem too much to bear. It is amazing what people can do when called upon to help. Recently, the State of Missouri, published its thanks for its employees who in the worst recession and lay off conditions, topped their Missouri Charitable Campaign contributions in 2009. When disaster brings together all people, can the world rally around everyday calls for peace and an end to hunger and war? When people respond with love, the results are tremendous.
