The World Wide Web As a Global School
By Nora Quiason
The information available in the world wide web never ceases to amaze me. I used to have to go to the library to research anything, peruse huge textbooks or sit in class to learn. Thanks to the internet, knowledge is available 24/7 to anyone with a computer online. It is like going to a global school. Yesterday, I learned about nitrous oxyhydrogen as a promising source of alternative energy, different materials for a kitchen back splash and how to stop my toilet from flushing continuously. The highly technical with the practical and mundane, art with science, new age and ancient history, people, places, and things. Topics are unlimited with the internet. The internet also provides formal education leading to a college degree. Universities and local colleges offer online courses making it easy for people with time constraints, working students and whatever other reason hinders them from going to a brick and mortar school. Forums for just about any topic are available and extremely helpful. They provide a classroom community for people with similar interests. Millions of internet users are very generous with their knowledge and readily provide suggestions for just about any query. Governments utilize the internet to bring information to the citizens. Public health concerns are disseminated more readily. News worldwide can be published with the click of a mouse. Indeed, the world wide web is a wonderful school without limits or borders. |

Yes, the web can be a wonderful school if used responsibly. Millions of sites are available, providing youths with endless opportunities to shop, do research, connect with friends, and play or download games and music. We are aware, though, that the Web has been exploited by all manner of unscrupulous individuals. Many Web sites feature explicit sex, and these are easy for the unwary to stumble upon. In the United States, for example,90 percent of youths surveyed between the ages of 8 and 16 said that they had unintentionally encountered pornography online - in most cases while doing homework! Parents are warned to monitor what their children are viewing in this WW "School."
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Yes. This is quite true and parents really have to be vigilant about permissions on their children's computers.
